Moving Overseas FAQs

When should I contact the removals company?

We recommend our customers contact us at least 3 months in advance of the moving date. This allows you to compare quotes, finalise travel and packing arrangements, and sign all relevant paperwork well in advance of the move. However, you can contact our team if you need to move quickly, and we will be happy to try to accommodate your needs.

What am I allowed to take?

This ultimately depends on the country you are moving to, as each country will have it’s own regulations that place duties on certain items or ban them altogether, for example, fluids or flammables are often forbidden. We recommend you thoroughly research the regulations that specifically apply to the country you are moving too, and also consider carefully the cost of moving some belongings overseas as opposed to buying replacements once you’re there. Our comprehensive international removals service means that we can facilitate moves from just a few boxes to a large quantity of items.

Should I do all my own packing?

Our team are experienced movers certified in their trade. We recommend you take advantage of our professional planning and packing service to ensure your belongings are transported as safely as possible. However, you can of course have plenty of involvement in the packing procedure, and we advise you to make a detailed inventory of the items to be moved to ensure nothing is lost or misplaced along the way.

Can I take my pets with me?

Most countries have strict laws regarding importing animals, and you will have to research quarantine laws and any paperwork and insurance you will need to take out for your pet. However, provided you follow the regulations of the country you are moving to, you are usually permitted to bring your pets with you. This would be something you would need to arrange independently, as Simon Long Removals are unable to transport any livestock.

Can I take my car/motorbike?

Simon Long Removals have the facilities to transport a range of belongings, including large items such as vehicles. However, before moving you should research the insurance and paperwork required to take a car abroad, as sometimes a full clean and service is required which can be extremely costly.

What if I’m not ready to receive my belongings when I arrive overseas?

If you’re going travelling before settling overseas, or just think you’ll need a bit of breathing space first, our storage facilities are available to store your belongings for as long as you need, and you can be safe in the knowledge that they are secure at all times.

Here at Simon Long Removals, we pride ourselves on delivering our customer’s items as safely and efficiently as possible, with a dedicated commitment to reducing any stress that an overseas move may cause.
