Planning Your Removals Checklist

When you’re finally ready to move home, it is unfortunately not as simple as putting your belongings in the car or van and driving to your new destination. There are many things that need to be taken care of before you move, a lot of it involving filling out forms and checking you have the right paperwork. This two part guide will help you keep track of what you need to do in the months and days leading up to your big move.

Planning Your Removals Checklist

Eight weeks before moving

By this point, you will have had an offer accepted and you will know how long you have to get all your jobs done. For a bit more peace of mind, book time off work around the moving date – a couple of days either side – in order to save you some rushing around.

Start accumulating boxes and containers ready for packing. There’s nothing more annoying than sorting all your possessions and finding you don’t have enough boxes to put them in!

As well as selecting the things you want to bring with you, now is the time to get rid of the things you don’t want to take. Set them into categories: items you’d like to throw away, items you’d like to sell and items you will give to charity.

This is also a good time to work out any insurance policies you may need to arrange, and also sort out the mortgage payments for your new home. If you have kids, you will need to transfer their school records and purchase their new uniform for them.

Six weeks before moving

Ensure that you have sorted out all the belongings that you won’t be bringing to your new home, and then organise how you are going to get rid of them. By removing unwanted items, it helps the removals company get an idea of how much they will need to be moving and it also assists with the pre-move survey they carry out.

Four weeks before moving

A month before you move, a Chartered Surveyor should have been contacted and a survey should have been arranged. You will then need to exchange contracts and finalising your moving in date – if you are a vehicle user, it will also be time for you to check or obtain parking permits for your new street.

One week before moving

The big day is getting closer, so the main focus will be on ensuring all important paperwork is safe and easily accessible should you need it. Any essentials (things for young children, medicine, etc) should also be left free so you can reach them when you need them. Apart from that, you should be good to go.

The day before the move

All the main tasks should be done by now, with the only jobs left being the small ones to round off the process. Pack things like overnight bags to prepare for the morning, as you will likely have all of your clothes in boxes and you don’t want to be sorting through them first thing in the morning! Also, pack any smaller objects that don’t require specialist packing or need to take priority over other items.

If you haven’t done so already, it might be time to drop your children off with family or friends, if they have agreed to look after them for a couple of days while you take care of the stressful parts of the move. Make sure to give your children a few of their favourite toys to keep them entertained and make life a little easier for your childminders.

Finally, and most importantly, make sure to remember the keys to your new home!

The day of the move

The big day has finally arrived, and all that planning, paperwork and packing is behind you. After having one final look around your home for anything you may have forgotten, it is time to leave everything to the professionals. The removals company will pack your belongings into their lorries and vans and begin to transport them over to your new home.

When you have made your way to your new house, make sure to give the removals team clear instructions about where to put your belongings. If all boxes are in the correct rooms, this will make unpacking much easier for you and save you the trouble of hauling heavy items up and down stairs and across corridors.

Once everything is in your new house and the removals company have left, the only thing left to do is take a well-earned break and relax in your new home. You are likely to start unpacking the following day or even the same day, so make sure you put your feet up for a few minutes before tackling the final task.
