How to Maximise Space in Your Self Storage Unit

Whether you’re between homes and looking for temporary storage for your bulky items or you’re downsizing and need long-term storage for the things you’re not ready to part with, a self storage unit is a convenient solution.

However, with so much stuff packed into a relatively compact area, it can be challenging to make the most of all available space and keep track of your belongings. That’s why, here at Simon Long Removals, we’ve compiled some of our top tips for how to maximise space in your self storage unit.

long term storage

Create an inventory

One problem that can arise when using a self storage unit is that you simply forget what’s in there, especially if you’re storing items on a long-term basis. The best way to maximise space and save yourself time and stress later on is by creating a comprehensive plan and inventory. Start by listing everything you’re planning to store and then label each box to help you keep track; not only does this ensure you can easily access frequently used items, but it means you can regularly evaluate everything you have in storage and dispose of anything you no longer need.

Dismantle furniture

No, we don’t mean saw your sofa in half, but if your storage unit holds bulky furniture that can be easily folded away or dismantled, then this can create some much-needed extra space. Be sure to keep any nuts, bolts and screws together in a clear bag and then attach it to the furniture for safekeeping, otherwise, you may find that you’re unable to put it back together again.

Create an aisle

What good is having a self storage unit if you can’t access what you need? Instead of stacking all your items in rows, leaving you unable to reach items at the back, you should place boxes along the outer walls and then work inwards, leaving an aisle in the middle that allows you to easily walk amongst your belongings.

Vacuum packing

Bulky fabric items, such as bedding, blankets, coats and linens can take up an unnecessary amount of space. Vacuum packing is a great way to reduce the volume of these soft items; simply pack them in a vacuum-sealed bag, attach your vacuum nozzle over the valve and then suck the air out of the bag. Not only does this shrink your items right down, but it can also help to keep them clean and protected from any dirt or dust.

Invest in shelving

By investing in shelving and hooks, you can take advantage of vertical storage space that would otherwise have gone to waste. Although you can stack boxes and achieve a similar result, you probably won’t be able to pile them to ceiling height as the bottom boxes may crumble under the weight. Using shelves allows you to sturdily stack all boxes without worrying about them toppling over.
