What Is the Easiest Way to Move Clothes?
The idea of transporting all your clothes to your new home may fill you with dread. After all, clothes can have both monetary and sentimental value, and so it’s important they arrive at your new address in good condition – and importantly, ready to wear.
In this article, we’ll cover some simple ways to move clothes safely and conveniently to lift the burden from this task.
How to pack clothes for moving
1. Take what you need
If something has been languishing in your wardrobe for months, or years, unworn or weathered, then it might be time to bid farewell. For many, moving house is the perfect time to declutter and this includes your wardrobe – this step can make transportation of clothes a much easier task once you’ve made this cut.
Be honest with yourself, and consider what clothes you actually need, and donate or recycle anything that you don’t wear, doesn’t fit, or is looking worn. Whether it’s Facebook, eBay, Depop or your local charity shop, there are lots of people out there who will welcome your old clothes.
You may also wish to separate clothes you need right now from seasonal or occasion clothes for easy access at the other end – maybe even have a separate box of outfits for the first few days in your new address.
2. Wardrobe boxes
Ever heard of a wardrobe box? Maybe not, but these speciality moving boxes are a godsend for transporting clothes. Simply put, these boxes essentially act as a makeshift wardrobe during transit. What’s more, you can keep your clothing on the hanger and just move clothes straight from your own wardrobe into the wardrobe box. The Simon Long Removals crew can also put wardrobe boxes together and take them back once clothes have been delivered.
3. Learn how to fold
Balling up your clothes may be alright for a weekend trip away, but if you want your clothing to arrive in good shape and not take up too much room, it’s time to ditch this bad habit and learn some space-saving folding techniques. There isn’t just one right way to fold clothes, and a quick internet search will reveal plenty of tutorials and how-to videos.
4. Make the most of vacuum bags and suitcases
Clothing is actually unexpectedly heavy, so be careful not to overload cardboard boxes or you could find them hard to lift. Instead, make the most of suitcases, vacuum bags or large bags for life to move clothes. Vacuum bags are a great way to both protect and compress clothing. Remember to label any suitcases or containers, and group clothing into categories to make unpacking easier e.g. a trousers case, a shirts case etc.
5. Pack shoes, accessories and delicates separately
Anything that can scuff or scratch, such as jewellery, belts or shoes, should be packed separately and carefully, with plenty of padding. Delicate or expensive clothing such as suits or evening dresses should be treated with extra care or packed in a special garment bag.
